With around 500 employees, SCHEUERLE Fahrzeugfabrik is the largest production facility in the TII Group. On the 70,000 m² company premises, self-propelled and towed vehicles are produced for transportation assignments on or off public roads.
The roots of SCHEUERLE Fahrzeugfabrik go back to 1869 when Christian Scheuerle opened his blacksmith workshop in Pfedelbach. His grandson, Willy Scheuerle, is regarded as a pioneer in the development of special vehicles for heavy-duty transport the development of which today forms the basic principle of numerous modern heavy-duty vehicles. Thus, the SCHEUERLE Fahrzeugfabrik is not only the birthplace of the hydraulically-supported pendulum axle but also the SPMT (self-propelled modular transporter), electronic multi-mode steering or the concept of the hydrostatic additional drive (PowerBooster).
Within the TII Group, SCHEUERLE Fahrzeugfabrik is now a centre of competence regarding self-propelled modular transport solutions, vehicles for heavy-duty transport on public roads (compact and modular vehicles), vehicles with additional drive units (PowerBooster) or solutions for the wind energy industry.
IMPULSES FOR THE INDUSTRY
In 1949, SCHEUERLE launched the first modern low-bed trailer. This was equipped with mechanically steerable bogie units and mechanical axle compensation. The following year, production of a modular system for all-wheel drive low-loader combinations from two-axle to multi-axle vehicles for 10 to 100-tonne payloads started.
The hydraulic pendulum axle - a hydraulic axle compensation for the transportation of payloads up to 500 tonnes - was introduced in 1957 whilst the additional drive for heavy-duty vehicles with its own power source followed in 1958. In 1972, SCHEUERLE launched the electronic multi-mode steering.
In the 1970s, SCHEUERLE developed the technology on the basis of a vehicle was introduced to the market in 1983 that would fundamentally revolutionize the heavy haulage sector. The SPMT (self-propelled modular transporter in container dimensions) entered the market and changed more than just the way how loads are transported. The production concepts of the modular construction of industrial, conveyor system or infrastructure projects were completely revised to tackle the challenges that lay ahead. Today, modules reach weights of up to 15,000 tonnes with no restrictions in place to increase this capability. They can be handled through the use of SPMTs. Continuous technical developments and innovations, e.g. SPMT widening solutions or the SPMT F with an increased final speed, have secured the technological advantage of the TII Group in this segment.
The PowerBooster technology, which provides an auxiliary unit for additional thrust during operations, is another innovation from Pfedelbach that has changed the global heavy haulage sector. PowerBooster auxiliary drives provide additional thrust for pulled vehicles whereby the power of a diesel engine is hydraulically transferred to the axles if the speed falls below a pre-set level. When reaching the final destination, this system makes it possible for use as a self-propelled vehicle without a tractor. Thus, under certain circumstances, a second tractor can be saved during transport and the load can be manoeuvred at the destination also in confined spaces.
The technologies for the transportation of wind power plants developed by SCHEUERLE have also shaped the global development of this industry. Companies worldwide, for example, rely on rotor blade adapters from SCHEUERLE. Mounted on a platform trailer, rotor blades can be accommodated, positioned up to an angle of 70°, swivelled, and turned their own axis. Installed on a quick-release plate, the rotor blades are securely fixed and can be manoeuvred past obstacles. In forested or built-up areas, negotiating tight corners or in the mountains, the fragile load is thus easily, safely and efficiently transported to its final destination.
